Doggy Academy for the Big CityJorge Vega is a native from Colombia. Just like celebrated Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan, Mr. Vega grew up in a farm with cattle, horses, chickens, goats, cats and of course dogs. In the farm Mr. Vega learned to respect each animal’s role, instead of expecting them to behave like human beings. “Every animal has a purpose: The cow produces milk, the horse provides transportation, the cats hunt for mice and the dogs shepherd the cattle and watch the property,” was his father’s, and mentor, mantra. In the farm, Mr. Vega became increasingly interested in the behavior of shepherd dogs and thus, mastered the art of becoming the pack leader. In order to finance his attendance to high school, Mr. Vega worked part time as an administrative support person at diverse dog grooming saloons and veterinary offices.
During his service time for the Colombian Armed Forces, Mr. Vega interest in dog behaviorism was radically boosted as he became a valued asset for the K-9 Unit Training Team. In 1991 Jorge Vega became a Working Dog trainer under the guidance of WUSV world champion Mr. Richard Flor. Until his relocation to New York City in 1999, Mr. Vega trained canines for drugs and explosives detection and personal protection. Among his prestigious clients were Avianca Airlines and the Colombian Armed Forces.
Mr. Vega recognizes that to treat dogs as human beings, home décor or fashion accessories is as unnatural, and unloving as putting a spouse on a leash. In fact, Martin Deeley, executive director of the International Association of Canine Professionals, said “People are treating their dogs like children and want them to be well-behaved like any member of the family would, but you can’t teach a dog like you teach a child,” as reported in a December 27th, 2007 New York Times Article. Expecting dogs to adopt human habits can only lead them to develop feelings of frustration, resulting on undesirable behaviors such as aggressive manners, excessive barking and destruction of house property as means to release mal-channeled energy.
Dogs are descendants of wolves, hence their genetic makeup is different from humans. In the wild, wolves function in a very tight hierarchical social structure. It is only natural for them to follow their pack leader. The same goes for dogs, instinctively they seek for your leadership and direction. To lead their way is to respect their nature. Mr. Vega understands that to shows respect, is also a demonstration of love.
Most recently, Mr. Vega founded Woof-Woof Doggy Education Academy, in order to provide Manhattan dog owners with customized training solutions, designed for the big city pets.
